
Grading CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays
CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays are typically graded on a scale of one (1) to five (5), with five being the highest and indicating a brand-new condition. The grading focuses on the condition of the disc and packaging.
Grading System:
- 5/5 Brand New: Brand-new Disc. May or may not be sealed in plastic. See title for details.
- 4/5 Like New: No scratches or marks on the Disc. Looks like a new Disc and plays perfectly.
- 3/5 Excellent: May have a couple of very faint or light scratches. The Disc plays perfectly.
- 2/5 Very Good: May have a few very faint or light scratches or scuffs. The Disc plays perfectly.
- 1/5 Good: Has some light scratches/scuffs, but does not affect the playback of the Disc.
Specific Condition Factors:
- Disc: Look for scratches, smudges, fingerprints, and other visible markings on the disc’s readable surface.
- Packaging: Evaluate the condition of the case, inserts, and other accompanying materials.
- Sealed Products: For sealed products, grading focuses on the condition of the packaging and any visible imperfections.
DVD Geographical Coding Regions:
- Region 1 – USA, Canada
- Region 2 – Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
- Region 3 – South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of Southeast Asia
- Region 4 – Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
- Region 5 – Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
- Region 6 – China
- Region 7 – Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
- Region 8 – Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc
- Region 0 – ALL: Uncoded and can be played Worldwide
PAL is the standard broadcast format in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia.
NTSC is the standard broadcast format in the United States.
