The Doom Patrol #1 (CGC Graded 9.6) DC Comics October 1987 (Direct Sale edition) First Issue with Wraparound Cover
$119.95
The issue successfully bridges the gap between the tragic 1960s silver-age era and the modern 1980s landscape. It sets up the emotional stakes and the mystery of the Chief’s whereabouts, which would later pave the way for Grant Morrison’s legendary run on the title.
In The Doom Patrol #1, the team rebuilds after its original members were tragically presumed dead years earlier. Arani Caulder (known as Celsius) tracks down the wreckage of the original team’s island explosion. She discovers her husband and team founder, Niles Caulder (The Chief), in an empty wheelchair, which leads her to believe he might still be alive. Celsius sets out to reunite the surviving members of the franchise. She first travels to an asylum to recruit Cliff Steele (Robotman), who is suffering from severe depression and stagnation. Meanwhile, a dangerous metahuman energy being named Kalki threatens the world, forcing the heroes out of hiding. Celsius raises a new team dynamic, also bringing in Joshua Clay (Tempest), a mutant and military deserter who is hesitant to fight again.
