The Human Fly #1 (First Fantastic Issue!) Marvel Comics September 1977 (CGC Graded 9.2)
$134.95
The Human Fly #1 is the first issue of a 19-issue Marvel Comics series created by Bill Mantlo. The series is famous for featuring the first comic appearance and origin of the Human Fly (Rick Rojatt), a stuntman with a steel-laced skeleton whose stunts raised money for children. This debut issue boasts significant comic trivia, as it features a highly sought-after guest cameo by Spider-Man during the character’s first outing to save an airliner from hijackers.
In The Human Fly #1, our hero is being lowered from a helicopter onto a Boeing 747 at Houston airport, assisted by Ted Locke and Blaze Kendall. On the ground, reporter Harmony Whyte covers the story, recalling how the Human Fly and his crew were at the airport when a mercenary gang took a passenger jet hostage for ransom. Blaze, a former pilot, remembers saving a jet from disaster after a heart attack, and credits the Human Fly for restoring her confidence. Ted, a Vietnam veteran who lost his hands saving civilians, is inspired by the Human Fly. Boosted by these memories, Blaze speeds the helicopter, and Ted stabilises the pole, allowing the Fly to reach the plane. Mercenaries inside push him off, but he barely regains hold using his boots. He recalls becoming disabled after losing his family and training himself to move again. Inside, the Human Fly fights the mercenaries, assisted by Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, who also boards to verify if a villain is on the plane. Spider-Man helps defeat the mercenaries, and the plane lands safely. Afterwards, the Human Fly pledges his reward to charity, prompting Harmony Whyte to think he’s ‘too good’ and sets out to expose him.
