About the Artist:
George William Bell was born in Melbourne in 1920. Early art training at Caulfield Technical School combined Commercial Art with Fine Art under William Dargie. In 1938, George worked as a silk screen operator for Thomas Henderson, a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. This was his first profound influence. Henderson, noted as an innovative art teacher in Victoria, was sacked during the Depression. In 1940, George served in the war in New Guinea and Bougainville. He studied New Guinea art within the limited scope of a serviceman. In 1946, George led a nomadic life around Australia, especially in the Northern Territory. In 1947, George returned to New Guinea to continue art studies. In 1948, George returned to Sydney and was employed as a ship’s painter and docker. George joined a circle of artists who attended classes at the Studio of Realist Art (SORA). Unfortunately, paintings and drawings from this period were destroyed. In 1950, George returned to Melbourne. He married and became involved in photography. In 1953, George was a member of Group M, a group of photographers who exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art of Australia (MoMA) under the direction of John Reed. George exhibited annually in Photo Vision. In 1963, George participated in the Urban Woman Exhibition at Melbourne Town Hall. This exhibition was later taken to Mexico during the 1968 Olympic Games. George remained active in photography until the 1970s. During this period, his photographic works were chosen for inclusion in the permanent Gernsheim Collection held in Texas, USA. In 1975, George resigned from The Herald, where he was a press artist, to take up painting full-time. In 1977, George exhibited in numerous group shows. In 1978, George was the prize winner in the Flinders Art Award. That work is now in the Shire of Flinders Art Collection. George passed away in 2008; however, his work is represented in many public and private collections throughout Australia.
