Star Trek spawned many great inventions: along with the replicator, the warp drive, and the holodeck, the phaser is one of the things that the modern Starfleet officer cannot do without. Unfortunately, in real life we are not yet ready to produce ‘particle beam weapons’ that shoot at the speed of light and whose ‘energy’ beam is still visible! But, until then, you can pretend with the Star Trek XI Phaser.
The Star Trek XI Phaser features in the eleventh Star Trek film released in 2009. The replica has faithful light and sound effects. There’s a setting for ‘stun’ (blue) as well as another setting for ‘vaporise’ which is a less martial term for kill, but means pretty much the same thing (red). You can switch from stunning to vaporizing at the touch of a button. If you then want to switch back to the stunning mode, the changeover is made by manually turning the corresponding segment over during the course of the phaser. The sound effects are adapted to the different settings. There is also a ‘power-up’ wheel on the upper part of the barrel to increase the energy supply. Just like the original, the Star Trek XI Phaser can fire both a continuous beam and short bursts of fire. However, the phaser beam is only imitated acoustically, not visualised! The Star Trek XI Phaser is a fun gadget for Trekkies of all ages that can be used to fight super imaginary Klingons or Romulans and should not be missing from any Star Trek collection.
