The Brunton Brass Compass with Decorative Wooden Box by Thos. J. Evans, London, is a modern reproduction of the 1920-based antique model. The Brass Brunton-style compass features a plaque on top that reads ‘Makers to the Queen 1920’. It comes complete in an original wooden parquetry case featuring a brass maker’s plaque, brass hooks for locking, and a baize-lined interior with a brass plaque on the underside of the lid.
The Thomas J. Evans London brass Brunton compass is an expertly crafted modern decorative reproduction, not a genuine historic military or maritime antique. It is engineered to look vintage through artificial ageing, brass patinas, and historical-sounding inscriptions. American geologist David W. Brunton patented the true “Brunton” pocket transit in 1894, and Ainsworth manufactured it in Colorado. Genuine British military forces did not use a “Thomas J. Evans London” Brunton transit compass during these eras.
While the magnetic needle usually points north and the internal mirror functions, they lack the precise calibration, manufacturing tolerances, and high-quality optics required for real geological surveying or marine navigation. They serve beautifully as rustic desk decorations, paperweights, or steampunk props, but should not be purchased or appraised as authentic period antiques.
