Created, written, and drawn by Jack “King” Kirby upon his legendary return to Marvel, the issue sets up a sprawling, mythological science-fiction epic.

The Eternals #1 opens with Doctor Daniel Damian, his daughter Margo, and his assistant Ike Harris discovering the God Chamber. Harris reveals that his true name is Ikaris. He explains to the Damians that the gods came to Earth to create three species of Hominidae from a common ancestor: the Deviants, the Humans, and the Eternals. As an Eternal, Ikaris has been searching for the God Chamber for a thousand years to activate the Cosmic Beacon. Over the Pacific, a human plane is destroyed by Kro to protect the secret of the undersea Lemuria. Tode orders him to find the God Chamber and destroy the Cosmic Beacon before the Eternals.
